HISTORIC

Bichon Frisé was born under the Italian Renaissance ( 1400-1560 ) of the crossing enter the Maltese bichon with the other small dogs of which mainly the poodle and the water spaniel. Known for the XIV-th century, in the Mediterranean pond, it was during this century introduced in the Canarian Islands. One named it then " Teneriffe ", of the name of the capital of this archipelago.
The race is introduced in France in the XVI e century under François Ier's administration, which makes it his favourite companion. But it is under Henri III's ( 1574-1589 ) administration that it finds the highlight, being himself a lover admirer of this race. It is during this century, during the occupation of Flanders by Spanish, that the bichon frisé became established in Belgium. During the XVII e and XVIII e centuries, it is adulated by the nobility and one sees it together with the ladies and the Lords of the kingdom. Mrs de Pompadour, notably, possesses some of it. The fame is such as the painter Fragonard ( 1732-1806 ) represents it in one of his pictures, as well as Goya, who appears it in some of his works.
At the beginning of XIX-th century, while it knows less success in France, it enjoys a deep success in Spain. One finds it in all courts accompanying most of considerable iberian. In France, it becomes again fashionable in second half of XIX-th century, under Napoleon III. Till the beginning of XX-th century, it remains the companion of the aristocracy before becoming more democratic and very appreciated by the quite complete population.
And so, one begins to see the bichon frisé in streets. It was not rare to meet it together with the players of barrel organ or with the handicapped persons. Until first world war, it was very appreciated by all the populations. Regrettably, as for many of the other races, after the first world conflict , breedings disappear practically .
In front of such a disaster, a Belgian breeder decides in the 1920's to put all his energy and all his talent to save the race. Held bet and the bichon frisé will be recognized by France in 1933. After a second bad period with the second world conflict, it is reborn again and knows from the middle of the XX e century a revival. In 1960, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale ( FCI) confers it as previous history Belgium and France. The bichon frisé knows a real renewal of popularity since the 1970's.

BEHAVIOR

The Bichon Frisé is a small dog roguish, always happy to live and cheerfully, very intelligent.
Very observer, he very fast understands what you expect from it, feels at once your day humor, and will know how to adapt itself to all the situations.
It is never aggressive, more with its congeners than with the human beings. So it has all the qualities to be a magnificent companion.
However it has a real behavior, but its liveliness does not go to excitement. How for the most part of dogs, its education asks for rigour and for firmness. It is easy to educate because it fast understands orders and has a big power of adaptation. So one will understand easily that it will be able to take advantage of all the faults in the education!
Complete hours of cocooning will satisfy it particularly, nevertheless it needs also to exert itself regularly, in the garden or in stroll.

GROOMING

If the bichon frisé does not ask for an extremely binding work, care of bringing to its coat are nevertheless essential.
There are the partisans of the quarterly cutting practised by a professional and those that are wildly set against it. You will not so wonder, if you frequent showdogs, to see considerable differences between dogs presented in France and those that you will be able to admire abroad.

Anyway, the care which you will bring to your bichon are important. Provide with a brush and with a comb, you have to disentangle the coat every three days on average. Once a month, the bichon will need a bath during which you will use a special shampoo for white hairs. Daily, you will clean the outline of the eyes with a physiological serum. And finally, you will control regularly the state of its ears.

REGISTRATION L.O.F.

There is pedigree dog and dog of appearance of race, the greenhorn can confuse. The only guarantee that the puppy which you go to buy is a dog of pure race, it is its registration in the "Livre des Origines Français" ( L.O.F) administered by the only body approved in France: the "Société Centrale Canine ( S.C.C )
At first, the breeder, owner of the bitch, has to declare to the S.C.C. the mating realized between two parents registered in the L.O.F. (or possibly a foreign Book if the stud dog is not in France). A file is opened and the breeder will receive a form first part of which will be of use to the notification of birth (he will indicate to it the date of the birth of puppies, their number and the distribution of sexes). Second part should be sent to the S.C.C. after the identification (by tattoo or microchip) puppies with the list of names. The S.C.C. will register then puppies on the L.O.F. in a temporary way and will establish for each of them a Birth Certificate that the breeder should have to hand you. This document guarantees that your animal is a dog of pure race, it will contain its number of registration on the Book and its genealogy. It is this document which will be replaced after the confirmation of your dog by the definitive Pedigree.
If you live abroad, it will be necessary to ask for a export pedigree which will replace the Birth Certificate.
