Shih-Tzu means dog lion in reference to the faithful companion of Buddha.
The adventure of Shih-Tzu began really in China under the dynasty Oof (205 before Jesus Christ - 220 Anno Domini). The Chinese emperors liked seeing offering Tibetan dogs by the Dalai Lama with whom they maintained diplomatic relations.
But the breeding will take its development only in the XIX-th century under the Manchu dynasty (on 1644 - 1912) when The Dalai Lama offered a couple of Shih-Tzu to the empress Der Ling that the emperor will not delay in To call Tzu Hsi. This one took herself of passion for the race in the point to have hundred of it whom she confided in care of her eunuches.
Considered as crowned, they lived in a pavilion of marble sprinkled with pillows of imperial silk. One called them " the pearls of the empress ".
It was very difficult to export Shih-Tzu. Indeed, when after numerous negotiations, a Shih-Tzu left China, the new owners had the unpleasant surprise to see dying their dog a little time after or females remained infertile. It is that before their departure, one had made for them eat of the crushed glass or one had sterilized females.
In the death of the empress Tzu Hsi in 1908, then with the fall of the empire, certain Shih-Tzu served of currency of exchange and left so the Speechless Town.
It is in 1930, with the arrival of a couple in England that began the modern history of Shih Tzu. About twenty years later, the breed is introduced in France and in the USA. And so breeding became intensified on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
